1970 Non/AC Convertible Rear Astro vents

What color paint should the fiberglass in the rear Astro vent tubs be? I had to clean out all the white body over spray paint after it was repainted by somebody else, and now I can't find what was done to them at the factory. This is seen while looking down through the rear vent grilles.

Surprisingly the answer is in the TIM&JG -- complete with a picture.

There was a blackout operation on the vent "tubs" using a mask to shield the body paint. I personally think the description in the TIM&JG is super -- but then I wrote it. I guess I might be a little biased, and disappointed you didn't find that useful.

I did read page 45 of the TIM&JG, and now I understand what it means by "A blackkout operation". I thought it was ONLY refering to the grille mounting surface being painted black! Thanks.

        This may help too:

Yes, it's a coupe, but the process was the same.

Good picture Patrick. Unlike the picture in the TIM&JG it doesn't show the edge of the mask used, but one can see the shadow of the yellow paint on the bottom of the trough. The black out operation left this shadow line of the original paint color because of the angled piece of fiber glass that one can see in your photo.

Excellent picture Patrick, thanks! Ok, this all started because that angled piece of fiberglass in the trough was completely coated of white body paint when somebody painted the car body 15 years ago, so I cleaned it all off. Should there be some body paint overspray in there? Is the black paint flat or semi-flat?

              Chris -

It's the same paint that was used to black out the underhood area.

I thought Patrick's picture showed where the black out (like John H said the same as under hood, around windshield and top front of doors) failed to cover all of the body color. That is especially prominent on yellow and red cars -- white too, I guess.
