    1989 Starting Problem

My 1989 Corvette has 230,000+ miles. It sleeps in a heated air conditioned garage and has been scoped twice in the last five years. The engine is like new and it is in pretty good shape.

Last year we put a new starter in it.

Now when I am trying to start it, it will just give me a clicking noise like a starter. So, I cleaned the battery posts and had the battery and alternator checked out. They are good according to the computer.

Anyone out there had this problem? I am open to suggestions, before I start changing the starter again?

And you cleaned the other end of the battery cables -- the ground end and the positive at the starter?

Use a digital voltmeter to check for 12 Volts at the starter while someone else tries to crank the engine -- be careful to have the meter well grounded and keep your body parts out of range of rotating machinery. It is possible for the cables to corrode under the insulation without it showing -- especially at the battery end. This can cause a voltage drop from one end of the cable to the other, and that can result in the issue you have.
