    Pitted AZ Rim

I have a correct AZ rim that is in good shape except for some pitting on the tire bead area. I was thinking of using something like JB Weld to gain a smooth surface so I won't have a leak.

Any ideas on how to correct this before I mount a tire on it?

    Thanks

    Ken,

I faced the same issue with a rim for my '61. I debated between welding and using JB Weld. Since the rim I was working on was pitted around the full circumference, I was afraid I would have trouble getting a smooth surface if I welded the rim.

I ended up using JB Weld to fill the pitting. After applying the material, I used a damp rag to smooth out the filler. After allowing 24 hours for the JB Weld to cure, I knocked down the high spots with a grinding wheel and then used a fine stone in a die grinder. I followed this up by sanding with fine sandpaper.

I had the wheel powder coated and it has held air without loss for 6 months.

    Regards,

    Dennis

I have not personally used it for this purpose. However, I would consider JB Weld a virtually perfect repair material for the wheel rim pitting repair.

Ken, Here in the northeast I see this alot with steel and aluminun wheels, @ my Automotive shop,We clean up with some sand paper or even one of those rotary tools w/the abrasive disc.s for cleaning gaskets and repaint and then if you can take the wheel and tire to a tire shop they have a coating that can be brushed onto the bead of wheel and that aids in sealing the bead, I have done thousands of times over the years, Works great and it a ruberized coatiing is also water repellant.

            Dennis,
I've always been told jb weld doesn't hold up with powder coating. I take it you had good results with it. Give me more info if you have any,

            Thanks,

              Steve,

I was curious before I did the repair and asked the powder coater if he was able to apply the material over JB Weld. He indicated, as long as the material has adhered well, there would not be an issue.

The repair and painting was done last fall and the tires were mounted this past spring. While they are not on the car yet, I have been checking the pressure and it has been fine.

                Ken,
Did you sand blast or glass bead before the repair so the powder coater didn't have to?
And by the way JB weld is the best for crack repair & small body work during restore. I was tired of chasing small cracks around my rear window about 30 years ago and (v)ed the cracks and used JB weld and never cracked again. Sands well also.
