1967 Shifter Console - can this chrome be saved/restored, or does it need re-chromed?

For those who are experienced in these things, is the streaking and dullness of the chrome on this shifter center console fixable?

Can the dullness, the 'lines' and the streaking be polished out, or does this mean that the chrome has gone bad on this part?

By comparison, the chrome on my original is almost mirror-like, although it has lots of nicks and scratches, small pits, a split in the metal along one of the forks, corrosion in the shift-boot area, etc.

IMO, the top one needs a LOT of work - should be de-plated, polished, and re-plated, then painted. The clear chrome layer has failed.

Thank you John. I may just repair the split in my original shifter console, repaint it, and be happy
