C2 Leaf spring bushings - replacement

While replacing the remainder of the rear bushings the leaf springs need attention as well. I put a jack the spring about half way between the diff and the wheel to remove pressure from the wheel and the nut. The spring however does not float on the bolt and I am concerned when I pull the bolt out to replace the cushion it will be hard to get the bolt back in.

What am I missing. Sorry first time down this road. I searched the archives and didnt see it

Try putting the jack as close as possible to the outer cushion. It may take more lifting than you'd expect.

Thanks Donald - I will give it a try - I was a little concerned about how much weight I could put on the end - since I have the rear sway bar off and the brackets there is better time than the present.

      Thanks again

Also if your spring is now in perfect shape color wise (its been say - restored) then you can cut a wood shim (angled) to protect the bottom of spring from floor jack saddle. Do not make too thick. Would try to use the GM rubber cushions, pn 3831586, however judges sometimes do not like the fatter look then the repo ones.

Put a good sized C-clamp on the spring to prevent the jack from moving until the bolt is fully released. Then just switch to the other side when the first is completed. Use a new cotter pin and the correct grade bolts.
This a rather easy job, shouldn't take more than 1/2 hour for both sides.

When I need to remove cushions on my cars the floor jack with a flat soft rubber about 1/2" will stick to the spring leaf and stop the jack from slipping.

As you lift the car, the leaf will straigthen so it's safe, very fast.
