Well preserved '67 L-79 Flint Valve Cover Label

    Hi Folks -

I was pleasantly surprised to find this very well preserved Flint sticker at the rear of the right valve cover when I removed the engine for rebuild earlier this summer.

I want to preserve the sticker and not allow it to deteriorate any more, however I plan to enjoy my 3-owner car as a driver.

So I guess I'll 'retire' this cover and get another one for the occasional use the car will see. I'm too paranoid a coolant leak or getting caught in a rain shower might ruin it......

You may also find a sticker on the rear side of the passenger valve cover that is yellow with two letters on it indicating the engine as an L79.

Don't want to be negative, but I think the #1 Team sticker was 1969-75 era.

John Hinkley may know for sure as "He was there in production at St. Louis. The yellow L79 stickers and crayon markers yes...., but # 1 Team ?

There's no sign of an 'HT' sticker, and I'm puzzled about the placement of the Flint label. It was either on the rear of the right valve cover, or the front of the left valve cover, depending on installation. The only other possibilities would involve the "Corvette" logo being upside down.....

I was under the impression the Flint label was supposed to be on the front of the right valve cover. Right?

          Bob,
The previous owner may have done what I also did to my '67.
When I noticed the decal on the the front passenger side of my L 79, I switched valve covers to "protect" the original sticker and then put the repo one again on the new front passenger side.

BTW had a conversation with MF Dobbins back in the 70s regarding this decal and he concurred that 67 L79s should have this decal.

            Jim -

The "#1 Team" label started in '67; it was on the front of the passenger side valve cover on all Flint-built engines. We also see it on '67 Camaro engines, including the Flint-built Z/28 engines with chrome valve covers.

I think it was pretty much a 1967-only thing, although it might have carried over into some or all 1968 engines. I don't think that any 1969 engines had it. I know that my 1969 small block with steel valve covers did not. Also, I have never seen one on a 1969+ small block with aluminum valve covers.

Yes, the Flint #1 sticker was usually emplaced on the front of the right side valve cover.

The 2 alpha character yellow engine ID sticker was usually emplaced on the rear of the right side valve cover.

However, the "Flint #1" sticker was designed to be more-or-less "permanent" and likely was printed on a material and using an adhesive that was somewhat durable. It was intended for "appreciation" by the customer. That's proven by the fact that yours has survived for over 40 years.

The engine identifier label was intended only for engine and assembly plant use. I don't think these were designed to be very durable, at all. Most fell off early in the car's life and I expect that's why there's none to be found on yours. Many of these that I've seen that did survive aren't even completely glued to the valve cover---the corners appeared to never have had any adhesive applied. I think these just had a small "dollop" of some cheap adhesive applied to the center and were then "slapped on".

...but for Bob's engine to have it on the back side (toward the firewall) I would suspect that the valve covers were off and possibly switched sides at some point in its time.

I'd say that occurred without a doubt.

                      Bob, et al,
here is a shot of my Flint label as well as shot of the casting flaw, both are originals and not repops.
