    1965 muncie

Has anyone seen an October 1964 dated Corvette Muncie. I know there was a GM strike from the 4th week of September to sometime in October/early November. Were any Muncies built during that time? Or did production start after the strike ended in early November? Thanks

I don't think Munci was involved in a GM strike.

For sure -- Muncie started building '65 MY trannys in August of 1964. Earliest I have pic of is P0806; earliest Corvette I've seen (in pics) is of VIN 00064, with P0818. All these have the distinctive wheel grind on the case edge before the assembly date characters were stamped.

The fall '64 GM strike didn't last very long, but the St. Louis plant didn't go back until about 6th November (according to my S-body date on one of the cars produced in the first day back, which has a P0916 trans [see pic below]). Muncie either stopped production for a week around the last week of Sept, or not at all [maybe just slowed down], if not affected by the labor contract.

So, to getting around to answering your question, there HAS to be Muncies with a P10xx assembly date, due to the rest of Chev and BOP demands, although my data collecting has been mainly from SOP to when the grinds ceased in Sept '64.

          Appreciate the info.
I have a muncie which has on the passenger side a large 5 and next to it a smaller 10 with 4 dots underneath the 10. Do you know what this represents?

The large 5 is just a mold or pattern number; nothing to do with dating, although higher numbers (I've seen as high as 13) are associated with early 1970 cases. They were probably using several molds at any given time. The small 10 with 4 dots under (possible that both are enclosed within a circle with a line through) is the casting month (10 = Oct) and the dots = week of the month (ie. 4th week of October).

Thumbnail pic shows a '66 trans assembled Feb 11th; the mold number is 9, and there are what looks like 4 dots with a numeral '1' above (no circle, or sometimes the circle was floating empty, off to the side). So cast 4th week of January.

              Thanks for the info Wayne.
The 10 and 4 dots are not in a circle but there is a circle with a line through it just to the right. Sounds like there are many variations.

                Dom -

ALL of GM was affected by the strike - it was a nationwide strike from September 25 - October 6th; St. Louis stayed out another month on local issues.

Did GM own munci? I was told that another manufacturer used the munci for about a month. Maybe I got things backwards, maybe GM used another for about a month. Was that saganaw?

Dom -- here's the smokestack at the Muncie IN plant. This was in April 2007; the plant was scheduled to be demolished, and some dismantlement had already begun.

Thanks, one would think I could read the letters on the case. All I have been able to see on parts latley are #s #s#s.
