The Motive pressure bleeder makes it a one-person, ten-minute job; best sixty bucks you can spend.

    John,

Tell me about the Motive pressure bleeder. Does the monster C clamp come with it or is this something you've fabricated? Not sure if a clamp of that size would fit in between the m/c and valve cover of a bb engine. How much and where was this purchased?

I pulled all of the calipers off and decided to go to o-ring seals. The master cylinder is empty so any remaining fluid will be in the lines. I am not comfortable with what type of brake fluid I had but when I refill the system I intend to use DOT 5. Should I do anything more to try and clear the lines?

You need to evacuate all of the DOT 3 or 4 fluid if you change to DOT 5. By rebuilding all of the calipers you'll automatically take care of the calipers. I would rebuild the master cylinder at the same time which will enable you to remove all the old fluid from it.

As far as the lines go, I would pull a vacuum on them and hold it for an hour, or so, to remove all of the fluid from them. Some folks like to flush the lines with DOT 5, too, but I don't think you need to go that far.

          Joe,
For what it's worth. I evacuated my brake system by flushing the system with methonol which has a low water content (about 5% or less) then evaporated the methonol with air and switched to dot 5 and it worked fine for 20 or so years till I did my 2nd restoration on my 67.

This is hands down the best idea. Although I didn't suck on the lines when I put DOT 5 in my 1970 I did flush with alcohol and then blew the lines out with shop air. If I were doing it again I might use the "caned" air from the computer store, but the first time there were no computer stores. I suppose if one were real anal (certainly that is none of us ) dry nitrogen might be a better option, but it is less available than some of the other options.

              Michael -

The 6" C-clamp and hunk of square aluminum tubing is my own setup, to ensure a good seal of the adapter to the top of the master cylinder; it comes with a pair of wingnut-tensioned chains as a "universal" method of holding the adapter on, but they don't work very well (they put my photo on their website, so they're aware of the issue). You can buy direct from www.motiveproducts.com.

They also have handy vented plastic bleeder bottles with a wire tether to hang them from.
