    Fuel Line routing 1957

My 1957 Fuel line (hard solid) from the tank ends just outside the fender shield. The flexible line going to the fuel pump passes under the edge of the shield and connects to the hard line and the fuel pump. It has been this way since I got the car (26yrs ago), and the flexible line is showing chaffing from the fender shield. Eventually, it would probably chew through and leak gas. Not a good situation. My question is where should this fuel line end? A few inches further back is a opening but that would require bending the fuel line. Something is not right here. Any comments about where the line should go? If you would like send me a private email and I can send a digital photo showing the problem.
    Thanks for your help.

    Ted -

That main fuel line should be well inboard of the inner fender, on top of the frame. Someone posted the photo below of their '57 Bowtie car a while back that shows the original configuration. I don't have any photos of my 57's, but both of them were exactly as shown in the photo.

      Thanks John,
I will see why mine is to the side. That really helps.

Yup, my late '56 is the same way and original.

I had to remove a section of soft line from before the fuel pump on mine because there was too much and it was causing a slight kink. Be sure to cut a precise length and it should avoid and chafing as you mentioned and any kinks like what I had.

That fuel hose from the main line on the frame to the fuel pump has brass fittings permanently crimped on each end - it's not just a typical piece of rubber hose you can cut and clamp. It has an SAE 45* inverted female fitting at the frame end, and a 1/4" NPT male fitting at the pump end that connects to the 45* brass elbow that screws into the fuel pump inlet.

Awesome, thanks for correcting me! I'll see if I can buy a reproduction for my car right now!

              Paragon has them.

                Re: Fuel Line routing 1957

Ok. 1 more question. A few places seem to have 2 options, 2x4 or non 2x4. I have a 1x4 setup so that's easy. However other places like CC and Paragon seem to only have the 1.

I'm using a 4346 long screw original fuel pump. I'm inclined to buy the one from ZIP that's not the 2x4 one, is this the right choice? I'm not sure what the inlet fitting size is the 4346...

EDIT: Sorry to stray off topic. Reading further there seem to be 55-56 and 57-62. Seems that since mine is a late 56 with a 4346 '57 pump, I really need the 57-62 2x4 hose even though my car is a 1x4...

If the fuel line were on the outside of the frame that would be something to get excited about.

I've been following this thread and have a quick question. On the 57's, the fuel line is on top of the frame, on my 59, the fuel line is on the side and passes under the frame at the front where the rubber flex line connects. Is this correct?

Yes. The fuel line routing changed from on top of the frame to the outside of the frame for '58.
