Paint repair, to use Lacquer or BC/CC ?

I am in the process of repairing the hood on my 1970. About 6 years ago it was painted with PPG Duracryl, and cleared with the same. I have had an in garage accident, (involving a Coleman lantern) and have stripped the hood down to the Kondar primer. While at the paint shop today, I bought some PPG K36 Acrylic Urethane Primer.

Now here is my question: Duracryl Lacquer is still available at the paint shop. BC/CC is tempting to me, for the durability and ease of application. (I',m told).

For a non-judged driver, do I stick with what is perceived as an inferior paint, or go for the BC/CC on the hood?

The color is Donnybrook Green Poly.

    Thanks in advance.

I think Duracryl will be best chance of a color match. Panel paint the hood then carry the buffing onto fenders to blend the shine. With BC/CC you probably will have to blend color onto the fenders to get your color match and buff onto doors to blend your shine(you will have to entirely clear both fenders-you can blend the clear but over time that blend will show) If the damage was localized on the hood you maybe could have sprayed the repaired area and blended all within the same panel and not stripped the entire hood. Remember ANYTIME you panel paint without blending there is little chance of a color match, There are always variances(age, sun, spray techniques, color mixing differences-and yes there are ALWAYS mixing differences) that will almost never allow you to achieve the exact same look. Some colors worse than others. All blending does is fool the eye to see the same color. Just a gradual progression from new into old makes differences not noticable. When you panel paint only there is no gradual progression just old and new side by side which makes even slight differences obvious. I would also do the cowl so as to not have new against old. Would be to hard to try to blend hood into cowl. However, don't strip entire cowl. If stripped you can't blend out the sides as well.
    Hope this helps.

I would try to sand out as much of existing primer before spraying the PPG, I can't tell you about compatability since I'm not familiar with Kondar.
If it is a laquer primer just be aware that the urethane primer is a hotter product so don't soak it on. Allow at least 15-20 min. flash time between coats

to match color, texture and sheen you have to stick with what the rest of the car is painted with.

        Ricky,

        Thanks for the input.

Kondar DZ3 is a PPG Acrylic Primer Surfacer.

Stay with the paint manufactures system of products.
In your case I would keep the same product for an accurate match.
BC/CC has advantages but not for what your looking to do here.

True BC/CC finishes use half a mil of high strength base color and 2 to 2.5 mil of clear coat. That would never produce an acceptable match for just a hood even with a blend attempt on the fenders.

Stay with whats on the car and consider yourself at an advantage because you know what products were used to paint your car.
