    1970 AM/FM Radio

My 1970 coupe was repainted a few years ago. When the car went in for the re-paint the radio was working. THe radio has not worked since the repaint. I have power to the plug, ground looks good from the grounding strap to frame. Radio lights up when light switch is on and that antenna has a good connection. Any advice I where I should start trouble shooting before I remove the original radio. Any help or suggestions would be most valuable to me. Thanks!

Unless they painted the interior -- go to your FLAPS (Friendly Local Auto Parts Store) and buy a cheap antenna and cable and substitute it for the one in the car. Just plug the new one into where the old one was and see if that makes the radio work. The only thing they should have messed with in re-painting your car is the antenna, so go there first. The one from the FLAPS will be < $20 so it is the easiest way to test the most logical component.

Depending on your agility and physical size you may have to remove the passenger side dash pad (the one with the pocket in it) to get to the radio antenna plug. If you need to remove that pad consult your copy of the AIM for attaching locations.

Mark, when you turn up the volume do you hear any static? Maybe theres something with the antenna lead, An easy test is to just buy a cheap antenna at the auto parts store and just plug it in to the back of radio, they can be had for about 15 bucks. this will help eliminate the factory antenna and lead.

I see Terry beat me to the punch.

        Terry and Ed,

Thank you both for your good advise on testing the antenna. I will buy an inexpensive antenna this weekend to see if that is where my problem is. No static when I turn up the volume.

        Thanks for your quick response.
