    C2 Steering Coupler Rivet Flaring

I am replacing the steering coupler rag and need information on how to correctly flare the rivets securing the rag to the steering wheel side of the coupler.

    Thanks in advance,

    Jerry

Re: C2 Steering Coupler Rivet Flaring

The production process at Saginaw Steering Gear was a hot riveting operation. The end of the rivet was heated very quickly such that high heat was not conducted into the 7 layer, neoprene rubber and cotton fabric, coupling disc. The production drawings indicate that the hot rivet "nugget" was to be a minimum of 0.385 inch diameter and at least 0.04 high.

There are after market parts where the end of the rivet is counterbored and the end peened over. This seems to be an acceptable and secure alternative but it is not the production process. The following is a picture of an aftermarket flexible coupling with a peened rivet and other non-production features.
