    '69 alternator

Does 1100843 ('69 61 amp a/c alt. for chevelles/passenger cars) have the same back half as the Corvette 1100884's/1100882's?
    Thanks,
    George

No it does not. The GM #1100843 is a DN series alternator and uses completely different drive and split ring case halves than the SI series alternators used for all 1969 Corvettes. The drive end (front) case half can be used for an SI series alternator but its configuration is not correct for such an alternator. The split ring (rear) case half is completely different and non-interchangeable between DN and SI series alternators.

      Hi Joe,

This is an old post, but I was hoping you could clarify the difference between a DN-series and an SI-series. In general, could a DN-series alternator, such as the 1100843 be used on a '69 corvette without any modification?

        Peter------

1969 Corvettes were among the very first GM cars to use an SI series alternator. In fact, I don't think any other Chevrolet used an SI alternator for 1969. This is why th 1969 Corvette alternators are so rare. In addition, the 1969 alternator drive end case configuration was used only for 1969-70 and the slip ring case half was unique to the 1969 model year.

In any event and to answer your specific question, the primary functional difference between a "DN" and "SI" series alternator is that the "DN" series uses an external, electro-mechanical-type voltage regulator whereas the "SI" series uses an internal, solid state voltage regulator. So, if a "DN" series alternator were to be used in place of an "SI" series for a 1969 Corvette, the external regulator would have to be added and significant wiring changes made. As a practical matter, I can see absolutely no reason to do this. In my opinion, the "SI" series alternator is far superior to the "DN" series.
