    PPG Paint

Has anyone used PPG Paint to repaint C-1 cars? I am about to paint a 62 original Roman Red and would like some suggestions on what brand to use.

    Re: PPG Paint

We used PPG exclusevly in our shop for many years. The secret to any paint is to use the system the manufacturer suggests for your application. DO NOT try to short cut in primers, primer-surfacers, sealers, any of the materials. PPG, DuPont, Sikkens are all good paints. I used DuPont for years as we had a very good manufacturer's rep in this area. When he left, his replacement only knew what was in the books, no actual experience. PPG hired an excellent painter for the rep in my area and it was an easy switch.

I used PPG when I painted my 1961 and was very satisfied. I am now using Valspar, which is considerably less expensive and provides a quality end-result, on my 1958 (both cars...black).

Just remember preparation is 90% of a paint job. Quality paint may be expensive, but in the long run, it is cheap. Done right modern materials applied correctly on these old cars could conceivably last a virtual lifetime.

              Carl,
More important than brand, is type of paint. If you want the look of original roman red i would highly recommend a single stage paint system like PPG's concept. Concept can be mixed with clear for the final coat/coats for UV protection, yet does not have the clear plastic food wrap look of base/clear paints. Anyone looking to paint a solid color - (black, white, red, yellow, cascade green, monaco orange) would be well advised to consider a single stage urathane like PPG's concept

I was not going to tell all my secrets Andre but you have "let the cat out of the bag".
