1960 Big Brake Car at Carlisle

Did anyone happen to see the 1960 White big brake car at Carlisle that was for sale? It was very clean and came to the show on a trailer with a price tag on it of 48K. I believe the engine had been replaced. According to the owner it has not been on the road for approximately 5 years and was from the southwest. The frame was stenciled below the drivers door and looked very good. Is it possible to tell easily if a car has always been a big brake car?

I was checking it out, neat car. Don't know nothing about the big brake cars myself. Wonder if it sold?

It had not sold by late Friday. I was told by the owner that he had received a solid offer of 40K from someone from Europe.

Yes, there are ways to tell if it was "original" or added brakes. The front original lower valence should have a opening behind the front bumper and a crude scoope funeling the cool air to the elephant ears attached to the rear of the backing plates.

It was an offer of 40 but it was refused. I didn't notice any changes to the valence. I was thinking this car would make a dynamite #3 Briggs Cunningham redo given that it was a big brake car, was formerly a racer, was white in color and was now missing it's original drive train. The seller did have the original carbs and tranny at 14k per. I have the phone number if you hadn't guessed that by now.

Chuck, I can send you a PM with a complete photo file of a known 60 BIG BRAKE car, that also was a club racer in New Jersey and the North East from 1960 thru the mid 70's. It was a one owner car until 2004 when the retired gentleman owner passed and had moved to Phoenix. He willed it to his stepdaughter, who in turn sold the car to the original New Jersey crew chief's brother, who owns a Corvette and restoration center in Arizona.

It may help you a lot in making a decision. Was the car in question owned by TOM PURDAY from Ohio? If so, it is a neat car.

Jim, that sounds very close to what I heard in that the car has been off the road for approximately 5 years, was involved in racing, and was from Arizona. The car came trailered and the brake cylinders needed rebuilt. The owner has the heads, carb setup and tranny at substantially extra cost . Mind you it was hot out and I was calculating the acquisition "logistics" while he was talking so some of these facts may be blurry. The only difference is the current owner has a Maryland 410 exchange. This car was not a beater. It was in outstanding condition (especially for a racer) from what I saw but my solid axle acumen is lacking. I would enjoy any information you have on it.

The Arizona car is not for sale to my knowledge. But the Ohio car was in late 2008. Both were red. What you describe sounds like a completely new car I have no knowledge of.....at least not quickly off the top of my head.
Send me a PM with your phone #, and I will be happy to call you.

                    Jim,
I don't believe it is Tom Purdys car.
Tom was at Carlisle buying and selling parts to complete his big brake car.
I also believe that there is no racing history on his car.

We know it was raced......but can't find the history.

Of course this is the Briggs Cunningham car at Carlisle this weekend in case anyone missed it. I don't have any pics of the 60 that was for sale but it appeared very stock.
