    Fuel Line Loom?

    Hi,

I'm not sure of the correct terminology, but will try to best describe it:

Looking directly into the rear wheel well I see a short section of a continuoes metal wrap that appears to be for protection purposes for the fuel line which is located very close to the access panel.

    My question is:

What finish should this "loom" be and what finish should the bolt and clamp that secures it to the frame be as well. I assume that there should be no "black out" based on assembly sequence.

Thank you very much in advance,
    Ralph

The loom itself is a larger version of the loom used on the temp sensor, essentially a tar dipped (black) finish. The clamping would typically be cad or zinc plated.

Loom is fabric not metal. Many suppliers have, but the one from DR REBUILD looks best/most original in my opinion.

        Larry,
The one on my car appears to be metal???
        Do I have something inappropriate?
        Thank you,
        Ralph

          Ralph:

Not aware of any factory installed metal loom in this area. Previous owner may have installed something different. The fuel line does however have a metal shielding where it it exposed and not protected. This shielding is similar to what is used on the brake lines. This may be what you are describing. It would be a zinc or glavanized continuous wire wrap.

At 40+years, the factory loom is pretty stiff, but fabric nevertheless. The AIM shows where this fabric loom is installed on the fuel line inside the right rear frame channel.

Be careful if removing/replacing so you do not damage the fuel line. That is had to fix without removing the body.

Yes this would be an exposed section of the fuel line if it was unprotected(approx. about 8"). I had a feeling my description was not very good. A better and most likely the correct termanology is "shielding" and yes, it's very similar to what I see on the brake lines. It comes very close to the nut that is on the outer side of the frame that secures the trailing arm and it's shims.
            Thank you!

What would be the purpose of this fabric loom, if it is entirely inside the frame channel; (anti-rattle ?) certainly isn't visible on my cars, and therefore couldn't be judged.

                Wayne:

That's probably it (anti-rattle) since you can't get a bolt or clamp into that area to hold it secure. Also the fabric loom might provide protection from abrasion, or metal to metal contact, inside the frame rail. Others may know for sure.

My body is off the frame on my 67 and that fabric is sticking out of the frame about 3 inches. By looking at the hole in the frame, The way the hole is shaped, and the angle the line comes out it would make it hard to use a gromit so I think that was the chafing solution for that irregular shaped hole. The bottom of the hole on mine is long enough not to cut into the fabric. Hard to explain the shape of the hole or see it on a vette unless standing over it and lifting the line.

                    Dom -

That fabric loom was originally all inside the frame rail, as shown in the Assembly Manual, UPC 8, Sheet B3, item #12. There IS a grommet at the front where the line enters the frame at the kickup (more like a nylon bushing than a grommet).
