In a recent article that was published in The Corvette Restorer, I stated that I believed that the correct fuel pump for single four barrel 1956 Corvettes was the 4262 pump. Here is the actual fuel pump section text from the article
Fuel Pump:
The March 1, 1957 Chevrolet Parts and Accessories Catalog indicates that the correct fuel pump for the 1956 single four barrel Corvette is the same fuel pump used on the 1956 Power Pack passenger car engines. This pump is stamped 4262. A different fuel pump, stamped 4346, is specified in this same manual for the two four barrel passenger cars and Corvette engines.
The April 1, 1956 Chevrolet Parts and Accessories Catalog indicates that the 4262 fuel pump is applicable to all 1956 Corvettes.
The fuel pump data for the five original single four cars is unknown.
Since the article was published, I was contacted by the owner of one of the five original single four cars. The owner told me that he had removed what he believed to be the original fuel pump many years ago (due to pump failure) but he still had the pump. This pump was a 4346 pump.
I went back to my original data sources and realized that I had interpreted the parts manual incorrectly.
After further research, I now believe the following is correct:
The 4262 fuel pump was used on early 1956 Corvettes.
The 4346 fuel pump was used on late 1956 Corvettes and all 1957 Corvettes.
The change occurred about the time that the fuel line changed from 5/16 inch to 3/8 inch.
Question to Vinnie: Is a note in The Corvette Restorer appropriate to update others on this info?
