    Hurst Shifter

At a local car show I noticed a real sharp 61 that had been restored. In talking to the owner he stated he was almost ready for it to be judged. After talking a while I moved on but came back as it was a car I wanted to look at again. I noticed his shifter looked different and looking closer it said Hurst. Will this cause the car to have major issues when being judged? I had a Hurst years ago in in a street rod in 1960 and loved it.

I don't know the points involved, but a Hurst is a full deduct on originality & Condition in Flight judging.

Gordon, you can get a shifter and linkage kit from Corvette Central for around $ 450. I put a Hurst shifter in my 61 because it was fun. Hurst shifters reduce the the throw to about a quarter of the stock shifter. I kept the original and it is back in the car now. The Hurst shifter may indicate that the owner drove it pretty hard, but that alone should not cause you to rule out purchasing the car.

Some models of Hurst shifters had a bolt on handle. If so you can purchase a stock appearing handle. A good judge can still spot it but it would be a smaller deduct (and still have Hurst performance). Don H.

If the corvette shifter is cleaned up and all tolerances are correct, this shifter shifts as good as any imo.

Agreed. I've seen original handles modified to fit the Hurst mechanism. Undetectable unless you crawl under the car and look closely.
