    Shop Press Accessories

I picked up a Nugier shop press last week off of Craigs list. It was posted for sale right here in my own neighborhood (literally a few blocks away) for less than a new chinese HF model so I jumped on it (I frequently scan Craigslist for tools). Hard to predict what its first job will be but will be nice not to have to run to the machine shop for little press jobs. Don't think I want to get into doing trailing arms and such, but would like to be able to do the odd bearing or race.

Question, tho since obviously the press all by itself is kinda useless, what sort of kit does one get for the business end of these things? I was looking at bearing and seal driver kits online, but nothing actually say's its for use with a shop press. I've heard stories of people using sockets or other makeshift items to adapt a press only to have them break and pieces go flying across the garage. I don't want that. I must not be using the right search terms.

Do a search for kent moore on eBay. You can find a lot of the tools that the shop manual specifies for the press. Even better is to check the TSM, get the tool number and then do a search for Kent Moore J-XXXXX to find the specific tool. When you search for the tool check the box that says "include title and description". This is found under the search button. I find a lot of tools that way.

Save old races, shafts,& get a bearing splitter or clam shell as it's sometimes called.
I have one of the HF 20 ton presses and replaced the jack twice already. Even the jack I got from Graingers is chinese.
Now all you need is a lathe, bridgeport and surface grinder!

Used Bridgeports and lathes have come down quite a bit in price as production shops have gone to CNC machining centers. Have them come up occassionally at auction and am amazed at how cheaply this equipment sells compared to just a few years ago. But then again, the small, conventional machine shop is going the way of the Dodo bird. Five years ago the local shops each had 10-15 employees and a two-three week backlog. Now the largest shop has three employees and is struggling to keep the doors open. They have been there for almost 50 years, what a shame

Very true, I see it daily. We just shut down a screw machine and secondary operation line, all gone to china, never to be done here again. Well maybe sometime after I'm long gone. The used machinery we spent about $75,000 on got a total of $4,000 in resale value.

Used mills are pretty worn out, like corvettes. Some are worth $3500 or more others are scrap value only. Same with grinders and lathes. The used dealers are selling them to places in So America as well as overseas.
Pretty sad to see how fast we were sold out.

I just purchased, out of an auction, a good used magnetic table surface grinder for my personal use. I was high bidder at $685.00. 18" X 36" table. Nice machine and works as good as a new one, just does not have the CNC controls that everyone wants today

That sounds like a nice machine, what brand is it? Do you have 3 phase or a converter?

Well, a couple of years ago, I picked this little jewel up off Craigslist too, a Smithy brand 3-in-1 machine.

Certainly, I can turn just about any adapter I would need, but that takes time. I was hoping to find mabe a set of most popular sizes.

Roto phase converter. Brand escapes me, I have it stripped down to repaint. Getting ready to soda blast it.
