I think the only year they made more was 1984 when the C4 came out. Actually, the 78-79 Corvettes were pretty damn good looking cars. The new fastback design worked much better with the plastic bumper. The 68-77 "flying buttress" coupe design which worked beautifully with the 68-73 "Kammback" ("concave") rear design just didn't work as well with the "convex" urethane rear bumpers. The fastback design finally cured that problem.
Plus, the 78-79 still had the 73-77 style front bumper and fascia which I think was the best looking of the urethane front bumpers.
The 78-79 were heavy and underpowered, but the L-82 was still available. Besides, who ever goes 150 MPH in a Corvette, anyway?
