NOS GM C2 Engine Wire Harness P/N Help

    Does someone have a 63/67 Corvette parts manual handy that could tell me what application the following GM engine wiring harness fits? The GM part number is;

    Group 2.525
    p/n 1# 2983579

I think it is for a 64 to 67 carbureted small block without A/C. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    James West

Current list price for a reproduction 396 engine harness is $144. To some a used original may be worth less than a new repro and to others it might command a higher price...

Thanks Jack, I'll see what it will bring. Maybe I'll be taking it back home with me.

It really depends on the date of manufacture of the "NOS" harness. as changes were made in various technologies, such as the width of the tape and wire insulations, service parts were often updated to use the "commonly available" replacement parts if they did not affect function. I've seen NOS wiring that was "spot on" ans some with changes that were easily seen. If it is in the original packaging, what is the date on the package?

Plus, in '65 there was a running change in wiring color coding (early vs. late) that affects concours authenticity. But, James is aware of this tidbit...

                Jack and Bill,

Thank for your input. The wiring harness is still in the original GM paper bag. I'll see if I can find any dates on the outside of the bag when I get home today.

Jack, his is actually "except" 396, but I see they're about the same $....Rich

                  edit:
I have a nos harness. Paid $260.55 2 1/2 years ago. Sold the 63 & never used it.

Re: NOS GM C2 Engine Wire Harness P/N Help

The 2982838 wire harness was for 63 Corvettes (exc. C.A.C.) as per my 1963 Chevrolet parts catalog (Oct. 1962) and the 2983579 wire harness was for 1964 Corvettes (exc. C.A.C.) as per my 1964 Chevrolet parts catalog (Oct. 1963).

GM # 2982838 was replaced with GM # 2983579 in March 1964 as per Chevrolet Parts History.

My 1965 Chevrolet parts catalogs (Oct. 1964, Jan. 1965, and May 1965) list GM # 2983579 for 63-65 Corvettes (exc. C.A.C.).

GM # 2983579 was not original equipment for the 63 Corvette since it did not exist during the 1963 model year. You really can not trace a part number unless you have the Chevrolet parts catalogs of the same time period.

Hard to tell from the picture for sure, but it looks like the "NOS" one was made after 1969 when the manufacturer converted from 1" wide tape to 1.3 inch wide tape. Will usually be noticed in judging if a judge is attentive.
