Tach and speedo cable bounce issues..

My 62 vette and 67 coupe deville both have bouncing needles.. I've heard there's a way to lube or grease. Anyone have such a tool and where can I find it??
    Thanks,
    Jim

    Jim,

I have never done it, but I understand you take the cable out of the housing and coat it lightly with bearing grease and re install.

    Good luck

Cable Ease not found at the auto parts, but at ACE Hardware is designed fro this, check a few other threads on the application.

Don't use wheel bearing grease! It's way to gummy for cables. GM used to have a special grease for speedo/tach cables, but it's long gone.

The best thing to use is something formulated specifically for cables like motorcycle cable lubes, and I've also had good success with Lock-Eze, which is spherical graphic in a petroleum distillate that evaporates and leaves the graphite behind.

It's best to remove the cables from the car, pull the cable out of the sheath and get everything squeaky clean before you proceed with lubricating them.

Duke, that is what cable ease is, sold by cc for $10 or the same thing at ACE for $3 a tube, your choice.

I'm not sure what you mean. Is Cable-Eze actually a grease, or is it a graphite emulsion like Lock-Eze?

Many years back I bought the grease fitting adapter and attempted to pump some of the GM grease into my Tach cable only to find the sheath burst open. I stopped what I was doing, taped the sheath temporarily and re-connected it as is, and it has worked well ever since.

How does that old adage go; If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.

Duke, yes yes & yes. IN a forum from earlier this year this cable specific graphite lubricant was identified as the only thing to use. Doing mine today, we'll let you know how it works, not that you use clock oil on the gauge part and then only clock oil due to its non gumming and very long life properties.

There's an 80% chance it is the cable assemblies and 20% chance of worn parts in the head assembly. For the 62 it's probably both. Always replace both the cable AND casing assembly together as the casing wears and the cable wants to "whip" like in a sine wave. Do not use graphite based lubricants, for one thing they're too messy The speedo shops use a grease called "Red Lightning" for all speedo components that need lube, but used to use Delco ST-800, which as mentioned, is gone.

                      Ron,

Are you going to remove the cables from the car?

I used Cable eeze on my 66 cable and it fixed the bounce. Bought it online at Amazon.com

                          Duke - no.

Results so far - I disconnected the distributor side to the tach cable, put some of this on that end & reconnected. The thread we had on this said it will work up the cable, after about 60 miles now I believe the tach bounce, reduced, will pass the NCRS test. Speedo tomorrow same way.

When I pull the cluster to install the original temp gauge, I put clock oil in the gauge side and a drop or two in that end of the cable as well.
