    Original '63 Tachometer Cable Housing

I searched the archives, but I could not not locate any photos of an original '63 tachometer or speedometer cable housing. I think I have one of each now, and thought posting some photos might be useful to someone. I've got additional photos, so if anyone is interested drop me a line and I'll forward them. After I cleaned these up, I thought it was interesting that 3 of the 4 bell-shaped end fittings were what appears to be copper-coated steel. Not sure of the reason. I've also got some reasonably close measurements for the housings and what I believe may be original cables (verified by De Luxe Speedometer in Denver). Those are: Tachometer: housing (22"), cable (23 1/4"); Speedometer: housing (55"), cable (56 1/4"). I don't know how these compare to the original AC catalogs, as I don't have access. I'll post the speedometer housing photos in a separate thread.

      Jim,

Take a look at one of my previous posts on the 63 Tach housing. Others that replied verify the originality of the cable housing.

      regards,

      Dan K.

Jim -- both the Chev P&A30 catalogs, Rev. July 1965, and the AC 1969 Cable and Casing catalog confirm your speedo cable (a.k.a. shaft) length at 56_1/8", with the casing length of 55.0" (this is measured from the upper ferrule (bell edge) to the lower ferrule edge -- it does NOT include the upper or lower nut lengths). This is for 4sp, 3sp, and Powerglide.

As for the tach cable, I remember my '63 # 7055 FI had one with the light gray covering; sold car about 1980. Unfortunately, the AC catalog I have does not list tach cables, and the GM catalogs are inconclusive, as service requirements were changed often to cover previous model years.
