Good question, Terry. I'm sure an improvement or upgrade was made, but i cannot tell you exactly what it is. I will try to find out for you.

On the other side of things--I finally replaced the original battery on my 2004 this spring. I've had absolutely no issues with anything on the car--now at 28+k miles.

The service guy said it was covered under warranty, they replaced the fuel tank and it took 2 more months to get the fuel tank for replacement. He told me the reason was that the mounting straps/braces were way overtightened at the factory and it cracked some welds and seams. This poor quality assembly and QC, along with the fact it would eat a battery every year, and the interior panels falling off, lead me to trade this dog in on a better vehicle. I am still afraid of the modern Vettes.

...this was a thread a while ago at Corvette Forum(C5 General)and yes, many, many cars were being repaired with the exact same part as many people were posting.

That kinda sucks.....sounds like we 04 owners can expect another steep bill down the road if we keep our cars....

I cannot confirm this, but reading the original bulletin, it specifies a VIN range for eligible vehicles. This leads me to believe the cars involved used a defective part from the supplier. I would have to believe the issue will not be found in the replacement parts.

I will try to find out for sure though.

It is a large VIN range which does look like many were built with the potentially defective part. I cannot find out what changed betewwen the production part and the replacement part, if anything. Will keep looking.

Just for the sake of discussion -- what is one to do if the new parts are no better/different than the old? It is not like there are any third-party (or reproduction, if you will) parts -- is there?

if the this part number is changed from the original part number that usually means the part has been changed or updated

                      Plastic fuel tanks strike again!
I am not sure plastic fuel tanks are necessarily the issue Joe. The 1994 to 1996 B-body RWD (Caprice/Impala) all had plastic tanks with no issues. In fact many are being re-purposed into upgraded A-body RWD (Chevelle, Cutlass and Skylark) vehicles. And many were used in law enforcement service where Ford had their own fuel tank issues that Chevrolet never had, but those issues were a whole other story.
