    1965 Frame date color

I'm restoring a 1965. One of the older judging manuals says the date written on the frame is in red crayon, but I thought it was in white. Which is correct? Red or white? I did not find a color in a later manual.
    Thanks

Here's the date off mine. It certainly isn't red. Possibly was originally white and dis-colored a bit to the yellow side.

Third and fourth editions do not state a color, simply "grease pencil". If you are referring to the frame's "pull date", then I don't think you can go wrong if you use white or orange.

Thank you Joe. I notice that your crayon date is farther forward than I thought. Has anyone seen the date for an early 65 farther back like in a 63 or 64? I have a November 64 car.

There was no precision as to where the pull date was placed, just as there was no precision relating to anything that was going at the assembly plant in those days. A general area was preferred, but not always used.

The way I understand it, the frames were stacked (perhaps) 10 high or less. When gangs of frames were queued for assembly, some lackey, union guy (often nursing a hangover................especially if it was a Monday) would come along and grab what he had in his pocket from his last day at work..............sometimes a white grease pencil, sometimes an orange, sometimes a lipstick that his girlfriend left in his pocket during the previous night's frenetic sexual escapades. He would write the "pull dates" on all the frames that were queued for assembly for the next couple days. There was considerable variation in placement of this mark.

I'll tell you, that the frame stencil appeared on the LEFT side rail before I restored my car. I took photos, sent them to Roy, who incorporated the change into the Judging Manual. I did not want to deal with the "anomaly" on the judging field, so I put the restoration stencil on the RIGHT side.

One of my father's war buddies was a paint inspector for GM in the fifties and sixties. He almost got fired because he was finding too many flaws in the paint.
