    1964 C2 Delco Radio Schematic

I am looking for a schematic for my 1964 C2 radio. I had a local shop look at it and they replaced the output transistor. This did not cure the problem. The sound is distorted, its not clean. They told me they need a schematic to trace out the problem. If anybody knows what the problem is or has a schematic they can email me I would really appreciate it.

    Hi Thomas:

I would not waste any more time or money locally. I went that route as well. These radios do have some common issues and once a component is replaced, it can stress another weak point. I would send it to Electro Design. Jerry knows exactly what to do to these radios, is fast and meticulous. His e-mail address is jerry@electrodesign.us. There are others as well but Jerry is very reasonable and you'll get a warranty. I don't want to quote prices but mine was pretty bad and it was around $150. Good luck

Jerry Rudbeck is an expert on midyear radios. Send him yours and he'll repair it at a reasonable price. No "learning curve" required... he already knows the radio!!! jerry@electrodesign.us.

Jerry works out of his home. I doubt he'll have a booth... or even if he would be going to Carlisle. The best thing is to give him a call. 864 363 0947

Are you sure your radio man cleaned the tuner and volume control pots (rheostats). That is usually the first thing you did with old radios so I hope he did it, but he may be of the newer electronic generation. I use tuner bath liberally on any old Stereo tuner, boom box or radio I have every so often just to make them last a few more decades.

              Just a thought.

Our own Joe Ray is excellent with Radios. Fast turn around too. Hate to admit this but it's true. vettenut007@comcast.net

Tom -- I could scan an email to you this p.m. Will consist of the schematic itself and the numbered PCB islands. Unfortunately, the puny pixel limits on on this site would render the diagrams unreadable if posted here.

Schematics are available from HW Sams (the 'backbone' of support for independent electronic repair techs). Also, you'll find original Delco Radio manuals for sale on sites like eBay.

I probably have a copy of the '64 manual in my collection, but getting a good scan from a saddle stitched paperback book is kind of tricky. Plus, you'll probably want more than just the schematic as there's good skinny in the accompanying service support text that surrounds the basic schematics.

On the 'distortion' issue. The factory original speakers for Corvette were equipped with a matching transformer mounted on the speaker (passenger car radios from the era had sufficient room inside the radio chassis itself to house the transformer) and that component is VITAL to the radio.

IF the Corvette radio is connected to an 'ordinary' speaker (say, standard 8-ohm impedance) that lacks the correct matching transformer, you can expect:

                    (1) VERY weak volume

                    (2) TERRIBLE frequency response (almost no bass, tinny sound + distortion)

                    (3) But, more importantly, a SHORT life time to burn-out/damage for the DS-501 audio drive transistor...

Tom -- Jack is right; I checked my Chevrolet Radio Service and Shop Manual for 1964, and although the circuit diagrams and printed circuit board island ID's and photos of components, could be captured in about 3 scans, there's 21 pages in all, including an excellent description (explanation of circuits, checking procedures for all stages) and a service parts list.

If I was tackling the job myself (a mere ChemE, not an EE like Jack) then I'd use the full info pack. Could you confirm that you have the model #985921, and if the sticker is still on it, serial # 21FJA (or B)-xxxx, or similar.

For starters, here's the on/off-volume control in a '64 (heh heh)

Jerry is the single best vendor/serviceman I have ever dealt with. Truly ethical.

What is the correct ohm value of correct speaker? (for a 64) I have a 4 ohm 10 watt speaker I bought from a driveline ad years ago but never installed. Is this correct? Thanks,
                              Dan

Drove the 64 over 5000 miles to three Regionals and the San Jose National, one dust storm and 40 lbs of bugs!
