    1965 L76 Alternator Pulley with C60

    This seems to be the week for pulleys so I thought I would try one more.
    On the 327/365 with air condition the 1965 AIM indicates a 3848023 for the alternator. Also in the notes it looks like the previous number was 3871244 and this change occured 11/9/64. This 3848023 also agrees with the pulley charts that Mark Gorney has provided. This must have been a production only pulley as there is no mention that I could find in the 1963,1965 and 1968 GM parts books. These were low production cars with 381 units in 1964 and 360 units in 1965. Was hoping someone (maybe Mark G) could provide some INFO on this pulley. I do not have a 1964 AIM to compare the pulley info in the C60 section to the 1965 AIM with the L76 option. This option was only available in thes two years.

    This cross section may help. Most of the A/C alternator pulleys are 3 inches in diameter, 2.92" pitch dia. The tricky part is when the alternator is moved to the left side and driven by the first belt track.
    So, with 741 total production, minus yours, we only need to find the other 740. Does the A/C compressor have the larger pulley?

      I can find no record of the GM #3871244, so if it was ever released, it was never available in SERVICE. However, the part number would fit within a series of consecutive Chevrolet part numbers that were assigned to alternator pullies. The strange thing is that it shows being replaced in November, 1964. That's because if it was a released part number, I would have expected it to have been released no sooner than about November, 1964. So, it could be that it was released for PRODUCTION only and then "died a quick death" or it was never actually released, at all.

      The GM #3848023, which looks like about a very late 1963 released part number is the one that I show for the 1964-E1965 L-76 with C-60 application. It was discontinued from SERVICE in October, 1964 and replaced by GM #3846180. That pulley probably also replaced the 3848023 for PRODUCTION at about the same time.

      Both the 3848023 and 3846180 were 3-3/64" OD, 43/64" ID and with a 1/2" groove.

      The GM #3846180 was discontinued from SERVICE in July, 1981 and replaced by GM #3844100, a pulley that dates from late 1963 and was used from that time for other Chevrolet applications. At 3-7/32" OD it has a slightly larger OD than the earlier pullies.
      In Appreciation of John Hinckley

        Hi Mark and Joe,
        Mark the car does have the large air cond pulley (6.375 dia.)Thanks for the drawing of the 3848023 pulley. It is almost identical to the 3846180. Appears to be a slight differences (.06) from the back of the pulley to the center line of the belt groove. Also wanted to thank you and Joe Lucia for all the work you guys have put into sorting out these pulley combinations. I have only seen a few of 741 cars and none had their original alternator pulleys.
        Best Regards,

          Page, Mark, and Joe

          I've been trying to identify an original 3.10" dia. alternator pulley (that has been replated) that I bought at Corvette Carlisle back in the late 1980's. It is similar to the drawing of the 3848023 pulley shown in Mark's post but some of the dimensions differ slightly. Use the drawing as a guide the measurements.

          3848023 pulley drawing:
          O.D. = 3.04"
          I.D. = 1.44"
          O.D. (backside) = 0.94"
          offset = 0.60"
          total width = 0.60" + 0.34 = 0.94"
          width (AT PD REF) = 0.50"

          My pulley in photos (possibly 3846180?):
          O.D. = 3.10"
          I.D. = 1.44"
          O.D. (backside) = 1.12"
          offset = 0.57"+/-
          total width = 0.57"+/- + 0.38"+/- = 0.95"+/-
          width (AT PD REF) = 0.50"

          NOS 3844100 pulley (in my collection):
          O.D. = 3.20"
          I.D. = 1.66"
          O.D. (backside) = 0.93"
          offset = 0.63"+/-
          total width = 0.63"+/- + 0.32"+/- = 0.95"+/-
          width (AT PD REF) = 0.50"

          Both pulleys 3843023 and 3846180 are shown in my 1964 Chevrolet Parts Catalog (Oct. 1963) with the same 3 3/64" O.D. (3.047") and same 1/2" groove width.

          GM 3848023 was replaced by 3846180 in Oct. 1964 which was then replaced by 3844100 in July 1981.

          Do you think that my pulley is GM # 3846180?

            On the 327/365 with air condition the 1965 AIM.....

            Page; not to hijack but since we're discussing '65 w/C60, I'm assuming your doing a revision check for the yet-to-be-published 6th ed. of the TIM&JG.

            On the same '65 AIM page UPC C60, sheet C2, item 9 shows pulley as #3875968 for base and L75 motor versions (part # added on 12-1-64 -- what did it replace ?). Main thing is that this is an integrated fan/pulley, not separate, as currently shows in 5th ed. guide table. See left side of big pic. The part # is stamped on the rear hub (can photograph for proof, if needed).

            I can't be of any help with the pulley on my '65 L76 / C60 / K66, [90 built] as the alternator (60 amp 1100697) is long gone.
