Ammeter shows some plus direction movement with higher rpm, but turning headlights on, even at higher rpm, shows a significant discharge condition, which suggests system is not charging. Can someone point me in the right direction to diagnose the problem and find a solution. Generator and regulator are in "new" condition. Ammeter connections or internals are suspect, as I have had to play with the connections there to be sure they are tight.

Re: '54 charging circuit
I started looking at the regulator adjustment procedures, but decided to recheck the ammeter wiring. I found the incoming wire terminal with rubber insulating boot (original harness) touching the outgoing terminal boot. I separated them, and now the ammeter shows that the charging circuit is operating normally. I guess it was "leaking" past the ammeter, giving a false reading. Need to really get under there and make sure the wires are far apart and tight. Thanks for the information.- Top
