    Wheel Weights

    Do the judges look for these ? I believe they are only on the inside. I'll be mounting Bias Blackwalls soon and want to make sure I don't need 42 year old weights. Jeff

    we look for the ones we can see - spare is easy, on the ground is more difficult. At least make sure the spare is correct.

      Re: Wheel Weights

      There are of course those rare types of rims/wheels that are so perfectly balanced as to not even need a single weight at all...

        Yup. Don't forget who you're dealin' with. Compared to the tiniest other things scrutinized, weights are elephants in the room!

        You can get some from Ebay and from someone (whose name escapes me right now) who advertises in the Driveline.

          Could you give me a name of the weight company. Are they still available. Thanks, Jeff

            Hi Jeff,
            I believe the weights had the word MICRO on them in raised letters. The ones in use in 70-72 (at least) had a cast 'crease' in each end that the judge can feel for even if he can't quite see the weight (thanks Steven!).
            Regards,
            Alan

            I believe the weights (and valve stem caps) can still be found at the 'right' auto salvage yards.

              Not ALL were MICRO -- that is just one of many suppliers. The dead give away, in addition to the "crease" as you put it is that the weights from "back in the day" had no metric weight showing on them, and the larger weights had the value on both ends of the weight. There was a Restorer story on the subject of wheel weights a while back. It focused on midyears, but there is no reason to think most of it wouldn't apply to early C3s.

                Jeff

                Yes the weights should only be on the inside of the rim.

                Attached is a picture of the wheel weights from my 68 original spare tire. It has the weights of two different manufacturers side by side.

                      Jeff to help you in your search others besides MICRO and a H in a circle were used. The others I have are a 14 in a circle, MCH, DEKA, HH, SNUQL, HALKO, <CH>, and weights with a arrow on them. I am sure that others exist. The important part is that the weights have fractional numbers on them not metric.

                        Hello Jeff;
                        Another suggestion;
                        Especially if you will drive your Corvette.
                        It is difficult to get a true balance only placing weights on the inside.
                        Use tape weights on the outside and place them where not visible w/ the trim ring or wheel cover in place.

                        Just my 2 cents.
                        Ray
                        And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
                        I hope you dance
