1967 exhaust heat shields - what part #s are correct for L79? Pictures of originals?

The car I'm restoring is a '67 with L79 engine and C60. It was either missing the exhaust heat shields, or I just haven't found them yet. The 1967 AIM shows 3851673 for LH and 3864180 for RH for the base engine (2" exhaust) on UPC 8, Sheet A-2, Item 7. When I checked the L79 option section, I didn't see any reference to a change in the exhaust heat shields from the base engine.

Does the L79 use the same 2" exhaust heat shields as the standard engine?

Does anyone have pictures of ORIGINAL exhaust heat shields for a 1967 L79? I found a great Thread on this subject in the archives, but all of the pictures that were being discussed are missing.

    Thank you,

    Scott

    Scott -

The heat shields shown in that Assembly Manual sheet are used for both 300hp and 350hp engines with manual transmissions; both applications use the same 2-1/2" front exhaust pipes (and intermediate pipe and muffler assemblies), although they're swaged down to 2" at the exhaust manifold outlets. The only application that used 2" pipes was the 300hp Powerglide, and the part numbers for those matching 2" shields are shown on the M35 Contents sheet.

Thanks for the explanation John. The 2" vs. 2-1/2" was throwing me off. I'll start looking for the 2-1/2 inch shields listed in UPC 8, Sheet A-2.

If anyone has pictures of originals, that would be very helpful too

          Scott,

Here's a pic of my 67 late 327/300 exhaust heat shields:

I forget which side was which, but they say that the one on the bottom is odd as it seems to be cut off short on the right side of the picture. Garanteed originals from my 67 and are now back on my car.

I resolved the shortened one as being at the end of the roll of sheet metal.

          Here they are refinished:
          :

As I remember, I think they were just beadblasted.

          Hope this helps, have fun.

            Thanks Jerry!

I found the old Thread were you described these exhaust shields, but the pictures were all gone.

I copied these pictures to my hard drive before they disappear again!

Actually, the other one is shorter because the end broke off. The end of mine is almost broken off at that same point as well.

Here are pictures of my original shields and the reproduction shields i purchased from Long Island. As you can see, the one shield is almost a perfect reproduction, but the other is not. The second lacks the curved end and the front clamp is in the wrong location.

                Christopher,

It looks like LIC sent you the correct LH shield, but the wrong RH shield. I have their heat shield set (#33-37E), and my RH shield has the curved end with the clamp in the correct location, like your original.

Good to know. I did notice while taking the pictures that the incorrect shield says 64-65, but i figured maybe that was the only one they had available.
