    1972 ?

I just happened to find a 72 for coupe for sale about 3 miles from where I live, original owner, no options listed in the ad, guy wants $22500 for the car, small block, manual trans, what are some of the things I should be looking at as potential problems? Is this reasonable money for the car? ( Price in Canadian Dollars) All help would be great. Car is warbonnet yellow. Might have been sold new by the dealer I work for.

    Matt,

I would love to see the posts on this! I am looking at a '72 BB coupe that is mostly original. The guy is asking 27K and I am thinking drop 10 and then....

I just talked with the owner he ordered the car in Aug of 71 from Parklane Motors in Sarnia Ontario Canada, and took delivery in Sept of 71. He has all of the paper work for the car as well as recepts for any service work. The engine was rebuilt at 80,000 and the owner assures me the block was not decked, car retains the original paint and interior, base engine, no options except for luggage rack, he even had owner's manual signed by Zora. Car has never been winter driven. Thoughs?? My Dad remembers the car coming of the truck as he worked for Parklane as there performance parts rep at the time.

        Hi Matthew,
I think this is a car worth checking out.
The original paint and interior make it unusual, and depending on the condition, interesting to a increasing amount of people.
I believe I'd take a careful look for rust since the car is 38 years old and has been driven. I understand rust does it's handiwork in summer too.
It'll be interesting to hear what you find!
        Regards,
        Alan

That's a lot of money for an unrestored base engine no-option '72 coupe. What is your goal with the car?

I bought my 72 big block for 5K last year and it needed everything to bring it back to show condition and I probably will have at least 30K into it before I'm done. And that's doing all of it myself. If the paint, chrome ,int, and drive line are good and you can get in and have fun I think the price sound good. I would try to get it on a lift and look for rust on the frame and the body mounts.( look by the rear wheels) Check for leaks and look at the back wheels for loose bearings and axles. You can also look under the body for any repairs. I also like to look at a car that is perfect and see what it costs. Then look at the car I want to buy, look at what it will cost to make everything it needs perfect. Then see if its worth buying. Parts and prices add up quick!!! Good luck.

              Re: 1972 ?

I just sold my 72 coupe. It had a/c, ps, pb, pw, turbo 400, leather interior, base 200 hp engine. The original paint is still on the car. It had been sitting inside a garage for 20 years . I put new bearings and rings in it when I bought it. I got it from the second owner, who still had all paperwork, pop, warranties, etc in the original envelope. When I rebuilt it I put a 650 holley and edelbrock intake, along with a mild comp cam and headers. However, all the original parts went with the car (intake, carb, cam, exhaust main.) It has 98,000 miles on it now, 83,000 when I got it.
              I sold it for $17,500.

Heres a link to ad for the car, owner says he has the original wheels in the garage.

                    Re: 1972 ?

Went and had a look this afternoon, I think I may pass on the car or take someone with me that can check into some of my suspicions. What I saw, rad hoses have all been replaced along with the clamps, Stamp pad painted over, numbers are hard to read but the old photos of the engine when it was rebuilt dont seem to show the block being decked looks like it was just a hone and rering, Spots in the paint that look like runs but I dont know how sloppy gm was in 72, owner kept every scrap of paper work from when he purchased and has purchased the package from GM Canada, everything worked on the car except the clock, birdcage looks like it maybe getting rusty, small rip in the drivers seat. My gut just says to pass on this one, I'm not sure if he's being honest about the cars paint, it looks like what I expected for original paint even a little better but there there are spots that look like over spray but not in the spots you expect. Anyway thanks for the advice took some photos but dont think they are worth posting
