    Hi Scott,
I believe the black paint on the evap. box should be more towards the glossy side. It should have more gloss than the firewall, fender panels, etc. It was installed after the blackout process.

My 70's air conditioning system was not operating correctly and I was out of town on business. I told my wife to take it to the dealership.
The dealership technitions could not disconnect the largest connection to the evaporator and did not do anything to get the air working. Did charge for their time.
I got home and started reading my service manual. It was right there in the serivce manual what to check. I did and found the Expansion Valve screen cloggled with desiccant from the dryer/filter. Cleaned the screen (metal), flushed the flow lines from the dryer to the expansion valve, and replaced the dyrer/filter. Took it to a shop to have vacuum pulled on the system and recharged with R12.
Air conditioning in my 1970 is still operational. The inability of disconnecting the large fitting was a good thing.
      Jim,

I hope my inability to disconnect the large fitting on the POA valve turns out to be a good thing too. Right now, the jury is still out

Thank you for the information, Page. I found Doc Rebuild's post in the archives where he described the process he used to restore the evaporator box from his own '67. He mentioned that he used multiple layers of paint on the inside of the box to protect the metal from condensation, and added a bead of weatherstrip along the seams between the walls and floor.

He doesn't mention what kind of paint he used, though. Since inside the box is a non-visible area, it seems like this might be a good place to use some kind of heavy duty anti-rust product, something like POR-15 maybe?

        Any suggestions?

I just installed original air conditioning in my 67. The evaporator housing was a 66 and I replaced the 66 evaporator with a 67 without a problem.
