    '61 Sun Visor Mounting Hardware

Could some one confirm the size of the machine screw that mounts the sun visor bracket to the upper windshield frame?

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,

    Dennis

Re: '61 Sun Visor Mounting Hardware

Dennis, You raised my curiosity last night when I read your post, so this morning I looked at my own 59, and another 59 I have apart. Same windshield frame as a 61/62. Both my 59 and 62 AIM's show the screw as the same part, #455475, used in all 4 locations, but..........

sometimes the simple little things become very complicated for me lately.

My 59 has #8-32 oval phillips machine screws at the inner mounts(center of frame), but the outer screws on mine are #10-24! The outers screw into the windshield posts. Unfortunately, the 59 car I have apart have their w/s posts out for chrome plating. Pics below are screws from my car, but the ss header from the other 59. The center holes in the welded in nut plate in the header appear to be #8-32, a bit loose from years of insertion/removals, but I would think that's what they should be.

So.......if the AIM calls out the same part# for all 4 locations, why is my 59 outers #10-24? Maybe my w/s posts got re-threaded years ago, maybe even by me???

I also see these are 4 of the same thread, but not sure which thread.

My opinion is that all 4 are #8-32.

Now that I may have thoroughly confused this simple request, maybe some one else can help too.

Yes, you guys are right. 10-24. I put a 10-24 tap in the header pictured and cleaned the threads and the 10-24 fits better. Makes sense now. Looks like my own 59 had the wrong sizes there all this time I've owned it.....25 years.

            Guy's,

Thanks a lot, I appreciate the confirmation.

I sent my windshield post out to be chromed so long ago, that I had forgotten that I have a mixed set. Only one of my posts have the hole for the sun visor.

I went to drill the hole and decided I should confirm the size before drilling. The inboard holes in the header were 10-24 but I couldn't get the screw started in the post that has the outer tapped hole. To complicate matters, a 8-32 screw fits that hole, but it is loose and doesn't fit well.

I suspect that when the post was chromed, it effected the hole size. I will run a 10-24 tap through the hole and all should be fine.

            Thanks again.

            Regards,

            Dennis
