    Kirk,

I think you are going to have a hard time finding the bison grain or crushed grain fabric for the front windlace which is the same as the rear wireon. If you find some let me know.

When I did my top I couldn't find any and used the pinpoint top material to fab one:

I used foam upholstry bead from an auto upholstry shop. It is a lot more flexible and resilient then the door seal bead. Use the 3/8" bead, you can also get the 1/2".

Then I glued it and hand sewed it:

    Didn't come out too shabby:

    But the wrong material.

Here's a shot of that 2007 National bowtie in the area of the rear wireon, so you can see the difference in the material:

The difference stands out a lot more on a black top than a white one.

I would not attempt to make a rear wireon, too complicated for me with the wire inside. But the closed rear wireon width is about 5/8" when flattened over the bow staples or tacks.

If you do find a source for that front windlace material, let me know. I need to redo mine.

    Cheers,

WOW!! Who'd have thunck getting the correct factory look for a midyear convertble top would be so tough............... the right nip here, tuck there, bend, snip, stitch, flange, no flange, taper, crushed grain, hunt for non-existant material ...... YI YI YI MY HEAD HURTS!! If a guy didn't drink BEFORE he started his vert top restoration he surely would AFTER!!!

How many points can someone expect to lose for an incorrect top bought from any of the top vendors?

        Have one on me, Shooter

Actually I lost only 2 for the wrong windlace material last time out, but it could have been worst, and 4 on the incorrect window logo.
To me it's really not the points, it's the fun of doing it yourself.

I agree Jerry, doing it yourself is what it's all about. I just didn't realize there were so many tricks to restoring a top correctly. I'm getting mine ready to be judged for the first time at the St. Louis chapter meet in October. Never had a car NCRS judged yet just at BG. I drive it and still have some "small" stuff to do before then. Yesterday I had it out for a run and discovered I couldn't switch the radio to FM. It worked fine last week but now the selector bar is moving too freely so I assume something has come undone. I don't think it's anything serious just a PITA to take it out to look at.

Kirk, Good luck with your top. be sure to post some pictures when you gwet it done. Shooter
