    62 master cylinder rebuild

    My old clunker finally needs the master cylinder rebuilt. You'd think GM could build one that lasted longer than 49 years.

    Since this car is still original as is the master cylinder, I'm somewhat reluctant to send it off to just anyone, no telling what I might get back. Any suggestions or good experiences in this regard?

            "Billy" at White Post is the president and contact person. They use brass sleeves instead of CRES, which I prefer. They will do a good job and turn around time is usually less than I week.

            One thing though, Billy does not like DOT 5 fluid and it will void their warranty. Don't know if you are planning on using silicone fluid or not. -Dan-

              Why use DOT 5 , hard to bleed and getting the air out , going to 8,000 feet , sponging brake I hear about . How many years have we used old normal fluid being OK . I'll stay with older fluid like me older . My 2 cents!

                I use silicone in my other cars, but doubt it's a big deal for the 62. I'm generally going so slow to watch out the for the idiot drivers texting, etc. that I could probably roll to a stop without ever hitting the brakes.

                    Mine was in the car since new and a little crud got in the small relief hole. It caused the brakes to stay locked up for awhile. Took out the MC and went to a reputable machine shop in the area. They machined it and put in a stainless steel sleeve. I installed a rebuild kit and flushed out the whole system with denatured alcohol and replaced the wheel cylinders. Added DOT-5 and bled the air out of the system and all has been working well since.

                      Jack,

                      You might consider Lone Start Caliper in Canton, Tx. and.....Dot 5 brake fluid. http://www.lonestarcaliper.com/
                      You would need to have a cleaned out system.....Dot 3 and 4 do not mix.

                        Hi;

                        I used Apple Hydraulics out at Calverton Long Island for both my 1963 and 1965. Stainless sleeves were install and the units rebuilt, excellent resuklts and quick turn around.

                          There has been a lot of thread activity on this forum over the DOT 5 vs DOT 3,4 controversy. My take on it is either one will work and whoever uses what, is they are happy with it. I don't see any complaints. Also, brass vs stainless sleeves, it too appears that either will work fine and everyone is a happy camper. The only caveat is in order to switch between fluids all of the old fluid must first be removed from the complete braking system. -Dan-

                            My was done by Brake and Equipment Warehouse in Minneapolis (612) 378-3141 (800) 233-4053. They use SS sleeve if that matters to you. Very quick turn around, looked like a new Master Cylinder when I got it back, and mine was really nasty.
                            I had them do the cleaning and install the sleeve, and I am going to rebuild with new kit. They charged $85 for this service and that includes the return postage. So if you don't want to pay for full sleeve and rebuild you can save a few bucks.
