The AIM shows a lock washer under the head of the bolt and nothing under the nut.

This doesn't make any sense. Can someone confirm this for me please.

Steve it is a clearance issue between the mount on the frame and the under body tub at that location. Hence the lock washer under the bolt head. The bolt and nut are a specific length and size. This has been noted on many original cars. Paul 18046

Steve, I would not use loc-tite because if you ever need to remove it..

The lock washer will hold it..

I agree. I've removed many many original upper shock bolts and the lock washer held them well.

A lockwasher in a clamping system is equally effective whether installed under the bolt head or installed under the nut. However, a lockwasher is not really a very effective thread "locking" device, at all. It will suffice in this case, though. You can use Locktite in addition to the lockwasher. Just use the BLUE Locktite #242. You won't have any trouble removing the bolt later.
