    Am I missing something?

In my recent search for a replacement flywheel for my brother's car, a '62 327/340hp, I have come across two correct part number flywheels.
It turns out that they where used in a boat application. They are both in very good condition but the clutch surface has never been used as the boat motors were direct drive. The attached pictures show the surface and other parts of the flywheels.
Is there any reason that I shouldn't use one of these flywheels? Am I missing something here? THey seem to me to be a good replacement. All I will have to do is have the clutch surface cleaned up for use with the clutch. Or .....?

    Thanks

Have you checked them for correct bolt patterns? How about weights? In a 57 Chevy that I raced back in the day, I used a truck flywheel and eleven inch clutch, but I don't have records of the part numbers any more.

Flywheels used on C1 corvettes used cast iron which where prone to catastrophic failure in high performance vehicles. I would chose a slightly later model made of nodular iron used in cars and trucks easily identified by an N preceding the casting number.

        David -

Those are the correct castings, but they were never finish-machined on the clutch side; any competent automotive machine shop can surface them correctly for use with a clutch. I've used LOTS of 9004 flywheels over the years, and wouldn't hesitate to use them for normal street use. A correctly-surfaced flywheel should look like the photo below.

          John,
Would you recccomend that the flywheel be balanced after the machining ?

Yes - I should have mentioned that in my post above.

notice the "x" on the flywheel as that was to be matched up with the "X" on the pressure plate in car use when using stock GM parts

The bolt pattern is correct. My only concern might be the ring gear, but they both look pretty good in the pictures.
I will buy one and find out. Then I will have it machined and balanced.
                  Thanks for the input everyone.

Jerry, I have not found a correctly dated T10 as yet. Still looking.
I was hoping to travel to Carlisle end of August but the CEO seems to think I need to be available for the kids going back to school that week.
I'm still working on that one.

                    Re: Am I missing something?

I have an original GM flywheel in my 62 that came out of a Chris Craft mahogany lake boat. The 283 in the boat was mounted backwards and drove the prop shaft off the front of the crank shaft. The flywheel was mounted on the motor just for balance. I had the face machined and it balanced out ok. Also ring gear was the same. It's been in my car for many years and runs great. Rich
