    65 Muncie ID Tag

Would someone out there tell me or post a pic of the correct installed position of the 7 digit trans tag for a 65 M20. Pretty sure that it should be 3857573. L84 w/3.70 gears. Looked through the archives but came up short on placement of the tag. Lastly, Are the tags from local vendors (LICS, ect) stamped like originals? Or, where can one find original tags?

    Thanks

I'm not sure that you'll find a 100% bona fide 'correct' position for the tranny ID tag. They were installed by Muncie assemblers and there probably was a human factors issue afoot (what worker, what shift, what day)... Typically, we see them beneath the LH side 'front' side cover bolts. But, I've seen some on the lower bolt and others on the upper bolt.

We see very few factory originals because the ID tag was typically discarded the first time a mechanic worked on the tranny. Expect full credit for the Long Island reproduction since most judges simply use a flash light to see if the sucka is actually there versus getting up close enough to actually read its emboss...

Here's a pic. of mine. It's never been touched (except to clean it to verify the numbers). 1965, L75, 3.36 gears.

Agree -- Jim's pic with the ....080 tag is what you'd expect to see on a '65 wide ratio L75 with 3.08 or 3.36 differential.

Also, I'd go with his location; lower forward bolt on sidecover.

But I'd reconsider going with that 3867573 tag. This part #, if it ever was installed by Muncie, would have been for L79, L76 L84 and L78 with close ratio and 3.08, 3.36, or 3.55 ratio diff. IMHO, #3857581 would be the correct tag for this group of engines and final drive ratios. The repop tag listings in LIC and CC catalogs are sometimes misleading, and depending on the differential ratio, could be incorrect. The '65 AIM sections G81 and M20 don't do anything to clarify the situation, either.

Your 3.70 calls for the tag shown below, 3857579, close ratio for the same four engines with either 3.70 or 4.11 ratio.

Finding an original tag is a hit-and-miss effort on eBay.

              Here's a 1965 tag with a 3.70 rear.
