55 wiper cable adjustment? help

When I hook up the cables I set the foot washer pump first. spring tension will pull it back to the off position. When I hook up the wiper cable from the dash it just flexes doesn't push out against the foot cables spring tension. If I manually turn the wipers on (pulling the lever out) the spring tension pulls the dash cable back to the off position....

I messed with it all day ended up breaking the washer off the dash cable......

Is this the correct foot cable? I doesn't look as big as the one Roy posted a while ago.

I'm sure I've hooked something up wrong...Any ideas? Bob

The foot pump cable is on the bottom so when you push the foot pump it starts the wipers so you can keep pumping water. The switch cable on top can turn the motor on with out using the foot pump. But the switch cable can or will flex at times using it by it's self so I push the foot pump at the same time I turn the switch, using both at the same time helps over come the wiper inner spring. If the foot pump cable doesn't SLIDE easy forward and back that may be your problem , the "guide piece" when the (screw washer) is tightened should not touch the cable . Did this help you ? You can reinstall the cable washer then smash the cable end flat again , if the inner cable is now to short pull it back from the casing , and cut some of the casing off ,

Thanks Roy; I'll spend some time on it today. Donna had me staining decks yesterday........You'd think there would be a fast way of hooking this up? Can you imagine trying to adjust it out on an assembly line? I see why they came up with the plastic piece in 56......bob
