    '67 327/350 timing

    I've done a search, but I can't find what I need. What I want to know is what the "A" and "B" on my timing tab mean. Thanks in advance.

    A=AFTER Top Dead Center, B=Before Top Dead Center.

      Dennis -

      The "A" is Advance, and the "B" isn't a "B" - it's an "R", for Retard. Both refer to the position of the timing index line on the balancer relative to the "0" on the timing tab, which is Top Dead Center. Toward the "A" is before TDC, and toward the "R" is after TDC.

            Wow! after getting these responses, I know why I was confused. "After" vs "Advanced"; "Before" vs "Retard"? I think Mr. Hinckley is correct, but I'm going to my shop to take a good look at my timing tab. Looks like a "B" to me, but with GM stampings, sometimes you can never be sure.

              Perhaps a more threshold question.....does it have the right balancer & timing chain cover?

                Re: '67 327/350 timing

                As far as I know it does. It is a relatively untouched car I've had since 1987. When I got it it had a little over 60K, which given the overall condition of the car, seemed correct. Also, I seem to remember seeing that the "A", "0" and ("B" or "R") were correct for this model, but for the life of me I can't find it documented anyplace. I've looked in the service manual and all the other books I have, googled and everything else, and the definitive information seems to have disappeared. I still have the "After" vs "Advanced" conundrum from the august contributors to this board. Whether the balancer and timing tab are correct is really irrelevant to me now; can't we get an answer to the "A" vs "B" or "R"? Or maybe someone can point me to an authoritative source where I can find out for myself?

                    Pictured is a sketch of a L66-67 timing cover tab (6" balancer) with the "A", "0", and "R" stampings. This tab was used on timing cover # 3885039 (1966 2nd design and 1967). These covers usually had date codes stamped on them as well ("12 66", "1 67", etc.). I have had several of these covers over the years.

                      Guys, Thanks for the information. I'm going up to my shop to check the timing tab on my car. It looks a lot like the one David sketched, rather than the one Ray sent a picture of. Ray; what year/model is the tab in your picture off of? It's starting to look to me like Chevrolet used both Advance/Retard (David) and Before/After (Ray) at different times, which could explain my confusion. Thanks to everyone who responded.

                        David's sketch is what is on all L79's I have owned and is correct for a 1967.

                          Hello Dennis;
                          It is just a timing tab picture demonstrating "before & after" TDC.
                          Not typical of a Corvette.
