    GM # 6271611 exhaust seal

    Hi All,

I searched the archieves for this but didn't find the answer to my question. GM # 6271611 2" exhaust seal (bull ring/donut) has a thin metal covering over one side of the gasket where it seals - does it matter as to what way it's installed?

Original versions of the 6271611 did not have the thin metal shield on one side. It's only later SERVICE versions that do. I THINK the shielded side is intended to go against the manifold to help shield the packing from the higher heat.

However, I usually don't use these soft packings. I use sintered metal rings. These were actually used in PRODUCTION for later model Corvettes and many trucks from the 50's onward. The 2" sintered metal ring is available from GM under GM #3731062.
