I'm looking at a differential carrier with the "thin" "P", casting #3789812 & a casting date of J316. I'm assuming that the 812 casting is for 61-2, so does that confirm that this is a service replacement piece done in Fall 1966?

Re: Differential ID
I would say yes. For one thing, the 3789812 casting did not exist as early as 1956, so the date can't represent 1956. While the case was still available in SERVICE until 1983, I doubt that it was still being manufactured as late as 1976, but it is possible it was. So, the date most likely represents 1966 but it's possible it could represent 1976. Either way, it's not a case originally used on any vehicle. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Differential ID
Over the past 40+yrs of rebuilding these early style rears (55-64 car and 56-62 Vette), I've seen BOTH cases and R&P gears with dates later than 1964. I think the LATEST date that I've seen ended in 7 (for 67). As mentioned, I'm quite sure that none of these dates were for the 70s-80s.
Furthermore, as I recall, ALLLLLLLLLLL the (CAST) dates ended with a single digit for the year--------------thus, they came from Detroit. I don't remember seeing and cases with a later than 64 date from Buffalo.
Also, all the R&P gears that I've ever seen have TWO digits STAMPED in them for the year. I CANNOT imagine that a R&P set were machined in Buffalo and then shipped to Detroit for assembly into a case! Thus, I'm concluding that ONLY the cast case casting dates had 1 digit (for Detroit) and 2 digits (for Buffalo), but BOTH the Detroit and Buffalo gears were stamped with 2 digits for the year.
Anyone have different thoughts/information?
Oh ya, and then to add another fly to the ointment, there were the Canadian rears!

I think the 2 digit year stampings (e.g. on ring and pinion, etc.) were used by both Detroit Gear and Axle as well as Chevrolet-Buffalo.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
