    Light At Lighter

I have no power on the blue wire going to the light that clips into the cigarette lighter on my 73. I have power to all the other lights in the dash and console. Any ideas on the little blue wire.

Glen, there must be a open in the blue wire somewhere, since its under the console why not tap into the shifter console lamp. and easy fix for now. and maybe down the road you may find why when your taking apart the cars interior.

The other thing I don't have a wiring diagram in front of me but generally the dash lamps are on lt. gray wires, It maybe different for the cigar lighter lamp.

I think you may need the key in the on position for the cigarette lighter light to come on.

Lyle, I think He is talking about the light that attaches to the housing?

I think that light is not controled with the dash lights.

The '72 wiring diagram shows that light on a gray wire with all the other dash lights; must have changed for '73 with a different feed if it's a blue wire.

Confirming John's statement - for 1972, courtesy light @ cig lighter is indeed a single gray wire. I believe (not sure as I'm currently not with my car) that this light is together with guage lights. The element itself gets power with car off, but light to housing is wired with dash lights (I think).

The wire is a small gauge, light blue in color. Yes it hooks on to the side of the lighter housing, the bulb is good.

                  Glenn,
according to my 72 shop manuel the wire for the cigar lamp should be gray as the console lamp.unless 73 is different. but I have been around GM cars for awhile and they have always used certain color wires, For the dash lamps it should be gray. does the harness appear to be the factory without out any sort of repairs. or maybe even a replacement for one of the venders.

In checking the 73-77 PV manual it says the cigarette lamp is only on when the headlights are on. It is not illuminated when only the parking lights are on.

A quick check of ST359-XX schematics shows the convention of the cig lighter lamp being on a single conductor, grey, wire tied to the instrument panel illumination lamps continued through 1977...

Without having a copy of the '73 wiring diagram to consult, I suspect Bubba has been at work in the center console.

Stop the presses! I just found a copy of the '73-75 Corvette wiring diagrams. Shore nuf, the cig lighter illumination lamp runs off a light blue wire and connects to a terminal on the HL switch that's SEPARATE from the other panel lamps (they were grey wires fed by the dimmer pot). This convention remained for '73-75...

Lyle, think we learned something new,But one has to ask why,so many years of making something the work with the same color wire and work with park or headlamps, then change it.

My only 'grab' was some designer(s) felt it was important for the cig lighter to have FULL illumination despite the setting of the dash lamp potentiometer so you couldn't 'miss' the lighter socket at night to return the cig element to its proper location...

Heck, maybe there was some obscure regulation on this??? But, yes, I was surprised to find the long honored Chevy convention of grey wire & the cig socket being under dash lamp dimmer control changed for a 3-year period!!!
