Should the big washer on top of the front shock be what color? And what kind of nut or nuts?

Re: 1967 front shocks ?
The upper retainer (washer) has an oiled, phosphate finish. The color varies a bit but is usually a light to medium gray. The nut was a heavy duty nut of 3/8-24 thread size and 21/64" thickness. It was phosphate finished. As a HD nut, I believe this nut was 5/8" or 11/16" across-the-flats as opposed to the normal 9/16" across-the-flats for 3/8" thread size nuts.Last edited by Joe L.; July 5, 2010, 06:45 PM.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1967 front shocks ?
here's the washer, as Joe describes -- it may still be available from GM. 2nd pic shows original front shock (early '65) with what I believe is correct top nut.

The 3790342 is no longer available from GM, but it was available until just a few years ago.
What is the across-the-flats dimension on the nut?In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1967 front shocks ?
It may be 9/16" wrench size but GM lists it as a heavy duty nut. Usually, a HD nut has a larger wrench size but sometimes it's only a matter of increased thickness. I don't have full specs for this nut that includes wrench size.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Joe, Chuck -- the nut in my pic is 0.555" across the flats and 0.325" high (via caliper measure).- Top

OK, apparently this HD nut was HD only with respect to its thickness and standard with respect to across-the-flats dimension. The thickness you report is just what I have in the specs for it that I do have.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
