    T10 1st and 3rd problem- Any ideas?

Ok, I am still working out some bugs in this 62 vette that I just picked up so here goes. I did do some searching from the archives but I am still uncertian if there is anything else I can do without yanking the tranny.

    1. 4 speed was working great and I went on a 75 mile drive where a few times after 50 miles into the trip it would grind going into 3rd. Everything else seemed ok.

    2. Then it popped out of 1st with a bang like it was not engaged fully, but worked ok after that for a while.

    3. Shortly after it would not go into 3rd, and 1st was hard to get into.

    4. Now it is VERY difficult to get into 1st if at all, so basically I only have R, 2, and 4.

Given that it was both 1st and 3rd, I figured my shifter may have been loose, but it was not.

It just seems too weird that both 1 and 3 now have this problem and they are both in the same direction. I would not think that both of those synchrons would go at the same time

    Thoughts?

    Thanks for your help.

The first thing I'd do is to check to be sure the clutch is fully releasing. Next, make sure the linkage is properly adjusted and undamaged.

If the above checks out ok, then you'll have to go into the transmission. You might have a broken synchro ring or other internal problem.

Guess what it was???? Re: T10 1st and 3rd problem- Any ideas?

You will NEVER believe what the problem was. The shifter was not moving completely to engage 1/3 and the reason was an Acorn shell flipped up into the shifter and and shell fragments was keeping the shifter from fully engaging.

After removing the shell, all is fine..

      Weird.
