    1961 Door Hinges

    1961 Door Hinges
Does the #3 point Philips screws that secure the hinge to the door support have captive nuts? How does one remove these screws if they turn but will not come out?

    Thanks for any help!

    Ray,

In this photo you can see the backside of the captive nut plate. If you take the kickpanel off you should be able to look up there and see what you're up against. Maybe a helper with pliers or the "I'm all by myself best friend helper.......vice grips".

edit: looking at this again(the last photo below), you can't get at it from there. Hmmm, this could be trouble....I need to look at the car up close a bit later. Not near it right now.

edit: Note that these Philips screws are actually for the hinge cover plates, not the hinges. The hinges are held with bolts to threaded plates behind the vertical reinforcements,(not shown, but the holes can be seen and the outline of the plates).

      Thanks! Richard

Great Pictures; and I thought I liked projects. I ended up drilling the head of the screws off and the hinge came right off. The cages are secured with aluminum rivets. I drilled the rivets out to get to the cage nuts. A little penetrating oil, vise and Vise Grip pliers and I removed the threaded section of the screw.

      Problem solved

      Thanks again!

Ok....Good way to fix it! No other way I'd say........

See below...... Just looked more closely in the shop. You cannot get in there from the sides or back because the fiberglass upright which is part of the hinge pillar wraps around the entire area.

Definitely a place for some thread cleaning and ant-seize compound when reassembled.
