Summary of Responses to 74' Judging Guide Items

I want to thank everyone who responded to my 8 different questions about the 73'/74' judging guide as it relates to my May built 74' L48 convertible with optional hardtop. I found the judging guide very helpful with only these 8 items being questioned as I went through the review. Here is a summary of the responses:
    1. Open ended wrench for hardtop likely not supplied with car. Judging guide likely in error.
    2. Trim ring card likely supplied for early build 74's and then deleted as per AIM. No evidence of a radio instruction card ever being supplied. Judging guide needs to clarify/correct.
    3. Yellow tag on tube from valve cover to air cleaner apparently exists - still would like to see a post with a picture. Unclear if any vendor is making a replacement
    4. Engine suffix label exists - unclear if any vendor is making a replacement
    5. Timing plate is spot welded to cover - Judging guide is in error.
    6. Power steering pulley is stamped steel on an L48 if you have AC - Judging guide requires clarification/correction
    7. AC lines going forward - one is a rubber hose and one is metal - Judging guide is correct but difficult to interpret unless one knows what a 73' system look like.
    8. No coolant decal on radiator shroud/support area - Judging guide is in error.

Nice job Bob, although if I was on the 1973> judging manual revision team I might think your evidence is a little thin. Since I am not on that team my opinion is worthless.

I have to point out that none of your "work" will bring about a change in the relevant manual unless you go a step farther and submit it to the appropriate NTL (National Team Leader). See the "contacts" radio button above. Sadly posts on the TDB count for naught when it comes to effecting a change in the manuals.

I suggest you provide the NTL links to the relevant sections because your titles will not allow anyone to search by title to find the threads.

Edit add: Carrying the research done on this board the extra step to get the TIM&JG changed is necessary for any of the manuals, not just 1973>. Most of the NTLs do not follow posts on this board, and generally are unaware of what is posted here. Add to that the fact that there is a schedule for TIM&JG updates and revisions and there can be some delay in implementing changes, and of course the NTLs have their own standards for what constitutes the necessary support for a change in the manuals.

Thanks Terry - My main objective was to clarify for my own purposes, what items I am missing or have incorrectly configured parts that I want to chase with my time and money. Like many cars that are now 36 plus years old, some of my parts are clearly not original or like the air system - missing. These include those that normally get serviced such as batteries, and shocks and some accessories that have had generic replacements such as the water pump, fuel pump and alternator so I have plenty to keep me busy. However no sense in diverting my efforts in chasing parts that the car likely never had in the first place.
I will forward my input to those who can influence the judging guide - I agree my proof is quite thin but at least I would hope those in charge of the judging guide would ask themselves how solid was their basis for including these items in the guide.

I understand your motivation for asking on the TDB, and your results should, and I would guess will, be bounced off their basis for stating what is already in the manual.

This board has several really great features. One is the ease with which many people with similar cars can communicate with each other. Another is the fact that we all, even those who only lurk, learn from each other. That mutual learning process completes a circle of information. I rarely find myself among 1973> Corvettes, so I have no axe to grind. I only want to see that circle of knowledge completed. I guess it is the school teacher in me.

Robert, I have attached a photo that shows the yellow tag I think you are talking about. The car was built late February 1974. I took delivery early March 1974 and this photo was taken on Memorial Day 1974. Vin #18168. Hope this is what you were looking for.

Thanks - that is the tag. No idea where to get one but at least I know what I need to obtain.

Robert try Paragon or LIC, they usually have these kind of things and if not can be the fastest to market.
