    Sign: real or reproduction

    Guys

A person called me wanting to sell this sign (picture attached). I have seen obvious "new" ones of these. Is there such a thing as an original or has this one just been taken out a buried in the back yard for a couple months!?

    thanks

    Hi Richie,
I guess you need to check the 'date code'!

I have one in my garage. Mine was purchased as a new item at a flea market 15-20 years ago. It might be old, but not real old.

                Re: Sign: real or reproduction

                Richie,

I've been buying a lot of signs the last couple of years and that one looks like a reproduction. I think you're right that it's been distressed, probably because someone hung it up outside. I've seen faux distressing too(mostly painted on), but the holes are the key on this one.

Also, most reproduction signs are printed on only a few different sizes of thin stock. There are some variances of a half inch or so in the stampings, but round signs are always around 12" and 22" in diameter, and rectangular signs are 12X16, 8.5X16, 10.5X16, and 5X18-20. But there are exceptions to these measurements and there are some new signs that are printed on heavier gauge steel.

Do a search for tin and steel signs. There are still a bunch of websites, although one of my favorites recently closed. You can get an idea of the sizes and the value. There are also sign vendors at most car shows. They change the designs from time to time on some types of signs, like the car sign you're looking at, so if it is older you may not see it on the web sites.

I think that people pay way too much for signs, and reproductions are cheap. Most of the signs in my garage are reproductions. They're there for decoration and not investment.

                Paul

LOL. Not quite the experts they think they are sometimes, eh? They also pay such a fraction of the value of things I kinda like it when they get screwed on something! Interesting shows, though, IMO.

its fun to watch and see what they can find of people's old sheds and out buildings. I have to admit when I am on back roads that I don't travel too much I try and do the same thing. but I can never find anything

You have to be careful with these signs. The last automobilia auction I went to, buyers were paying way more than retail for reproductions. There are very few steals in signs anymore.

I think that was the same episode where they tried to buy three carbs from an original "tri-carb" '58 corvette. I don't think so........
