I was wondering if anyone has replaced their 350 hp cam during an engine rebuild and what type and product you may have used to stay as close to stock as possible, the vast amount of choices out there is a bit mind boggling, and i want the car to run as it should when stock Thanks

GM #3896962. Still available from GM under the original part number and carrying a LIST price of about 173 bucks. It's one of the few camshafts still available from GM for pre-1982 applications and the ONLY one available under the original part number. In fact, GM still uses this camshaft in some crate engines. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

The "GM part" is manufactured either by F-M or Dana. The only difference is the price!

Re: 1970 L-46 camshaft
This may be the case or it may not be. Do you have any information that would CONFIRM that Federal-Mogul or Dana manufactures this piece?
In general, GM engine plants are set-up to manufacture camshafts, especially "old style" engine plants like Toluca, Mexico where Gen I small blocks are still manufactured. Also, I think that GM still manufactures some camshafts at the Bay City, MI Powertrain plant. I'm certain that these camshafts are no longer manufactured from specific cores, but that does not mean that they are not manufactured by GM.
In the past, I have carefully compared equivalent GM and Federal-Mogul engine parts. While the parts are very similar and they MAY be of equivalent quality, I have yet to examine any such parts that were what I would call IDENTICAL. The way I figure it, if they are not IDENTICAL in every way, they likely did not originate from the same manufacturing source. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1970 L-46 camshaft
I'm under the impression that GM is no longer manufacturing such "piece parts" as camshafts for either vintage or current engines.
I am confident that the F-M and Dana replacements are manufactured to the GM drawings, and that's all that really counts.
The only "hot rod cam" vendor I trust to manfucture a camshaft of equal quality to GM originals is Crane.
