    66 Judging manual

I know I'm just missing it but I can't seem find to the timing cover in the new manual. If somebody could point the blind in the right direction - would appreciate it.
    Thanks,

    Thanks,

Don't know if the new '66 manual changed the location of the timing cover discussion from the previous edition, but if it's like the '65 manual, then this subject is located in Mechanical 2. Cylinder Case, under small block and big block.

Every 6 months I have to retrain myself to remember where it is discussed, as I usually look under harmonic balancers, pulleys, belts, etc.

      Thanks,
      Peter -

The timing cover isn't addressed in the new '66 judging guide.

        Re: 66 Judging manual

It's my recollection that this (timing cover description) is one of the big 'disconnect' issues for the mid-year cars. The only JG book that I know of in the 63-67 line up to mention the timing cover IS the 1965 book.

And, there, as you say, the information is kind of 'hidden' in the block (cylinder case) descriptive text. C1 and C3 Corvette JG books have nicely detailed descriptions, some with supporting pictures!

I don't know why we seem to have 'forgotten' about this part/component when it comes to mid-year Corvettes vs. their earlier and later brothers... But, I guess it's not a big deal issue as I don't find the timing cover called out on the Flight Score Sheets for mid-year cars either!

For C1 cars, the timing cover/tab is judged as a Chassis component under, 25, Engine Cooling System. For C3 cars it's a Mechanical component under, 8, Distributor & Coil.

Thanks guys I thought I was starting down the Alzheimer's path a little early.
Since it's not judged, I guess there is no point in asking what the different head marks were on the timing cover bolts.

            Peter,
Depends on 327 or 427 but it will be only a matter of time before there will be a challenge to get it right.

Ron, I went back and looked in my two old 66 JMs and it is as Jack said not addressed there either, so it's been a quite a while that it has not been covered. I have been putting together a spare 66 L-79 engine and I am going junk yarding and found one with a few 60s cars with engines still intact and would like to have known what bolts would have been acceptable for the L-79 timing cover.

Peter my 1966 L-79 engine has " L " for the bolt head marking. I am sure that you can"t rule out other head markings. Others could be " E "," RSC "," RBW "," TR "," M " and probably a couple more.

Michael - Mine does too, but if I come across other nice bolts and they were used I'd take them too, but I don't want to spend more time than necessary since it is peak of snake season here.
